On a recent trip to Antigua, Guatemala, one of the authors of BasketballNet.net encountered a basketball court that was in use.
This one was on the northeast side of town, on 1st Avenida Norte, very close to the stairs to walk up to Cerro de la Cruz.
There were actually no basketball nets on this hoop — only the strands remaining from previous nylon basketball nets. I think they need to invest in some chain or metal basketball nets, so that they’ll last through the seasons!
Basketball is indeed an internationally known sport. Sure, it’s not as popular in Guatemala as soccer, but it’s still an actively played game.
I’ve witnessed several pickup games on the court in the picture below — even one day when a wheelchair game of basketball was in action by some skilled players.
The court has also been home to a couple soccer games — grass fields are hard to come by, so soccer is often played on paved surfaces as well.
Enjoy the basketball court picture below!
